    Abstract
    A series ofp-substituted benzyl alcohols have been oxidized to their corresponding aldehydes using aqueous hypochlorite and phase-transfer catalyst (PTC) conditions. The reaction constant, p, has been determined to be +1.03. Possible mechanisms are suggested.
