Expanding green chemistry principles into the organic chemistry laboratories
Abstract
Abstract
Few experiments conducted at TCNJ in the organic chemistry lab are “green.” Green chemistry is an important topic to consider when in the lab. It involves safer and less hazardous methodologies, concept of minimizing waste better vs. getting rid of waste which is expensive, environmental justice, and student interest. It is important to emphasize teaching lab skills with a broad, impactful purpose when in a teaching lab. There is a need for more inquiry-based experiments, data collection and analysis in organic chemistry at TCNJ. The objectives of this study are 1) to survey literature to identify relevant green chemistry labs that can be conducted within the constraints of the lab curriculum at TCNJ and would be of interest to students; 2) to test out the lab experiments and adjust conditions to meet constraints of a TCNJ lab period; 3) to master new lab techniques that can be used in other green lab experiments; and 4) to actively participate in a new subject in chemistry that is helpful to learn for future work.
