Person-centered care for institutionalized older adults in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil: a case study
Abstract
Abstract
As countries become more developed and undergo a demographic transition, the number of older adults is expected to grow at an increasing rate (Sköldunger, 2020). This change in population structure leads to a heightened need for long-term care facilities (LTCFs) that can provide quality housing and care for older adults. Long-term care in Brazil is characterized by several criticisms directed at the services provided, the lack of state support for families, and the developing support of the public (Poltroniere & Ribeiro, 2019). Given the visibility of LTCFs in the Brazilian context during the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the pressing need for improvements in the quality of care provided to residents, this study focusing on person-centered care (PCC) was relevant. The aim is to discuss research findings on PCC for older adults living in Brazilian LTCFs in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
