How do education faculty parents talk to their kids about climate change?
Abstract
Abstract
In 2020, New Jersey became the first U.S. state to adopt climate change education standards across all grade levels and subjects, implemented in 2022-2023. This study examined TCNJ education faculty who are also parents of K–12 students, exploring the intersection of education policy, professional work, and family values. Method: Qualitative focus group (n = 3); thematic analysis. Findings: Parents adjusted conversations to be developmentally appropriate. Wanted clearer school communication and resources. Supported standards but questioned implementation. Saw themselves as co-educators and emotional guides. Conclusion: Faculty parents face similar concerns as other parents, but their professional expertise adds tension and uncertainty; highlights need for
age-appropriate tools and stronger school-home transparency.
